Amidst the international commitments of nations to sustainable development goal 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation), it is vital for the public utilities to provide an increased coverage of sewerage infrastructure. The choice of an appropriate sewage treatment technology is of utmost significance while planning sewage treatment facilities. The need for sustainable and resilient urban water infrastructure requires addressing the problem from multiple dimensions of technical, economic, social and environmental simultaneously; necessitating the adoption of multi-criteria decision-making techniques. In this regard, JalVishwa is a decision support tool developed at the Centre of Urban Science and Engineering, IIT Bombay and is an application of multi-criteria decision-making in the wastewater sector. The tool is developed as part of the research project 'Innovation Centre for Eco-prudent Wastewater Solutions' funded by the Department of Science and Technology, Government of India.
